CBA Alberta welcomes the signing of a new long-term governance agreement for Legal Aid Alberta, which replaces the previous agreement signed in 2024 and secures stable funding through 2030. This milestone is a testament to the collective efforts and commitment of the Government of Alberta, Legal Aid Alberta and the Law Society of Alberta; and it underscores the shared dedication of stakeholders across the legal profession to ensuring that legal aid services remain accessible for all Albertans.
Advocating for adequate, sustainable and dependable funding for legal aid has long been a priority of CBA Alberta, and our public opinion research continues to demonstrate that this is a priority for Albertans, as well. We were pleased to participate in the government’s consultations on legal aid and thank all those involved for their thoughtful contributions. CBA Alberta’s own feedback was guided by the Legal Aid Working Group of the Agenda for Justice Committee, chaired by past president David Hiebert, K.C., and we thank all those members who participated.
As we move forward, we remain steadfast in our commitment to advocate for a strong legal aid plan, which will improve access to justice for all Albertans. CBA Alberta is committed to ongoing engagement with stakeholders on the future of legal aid, and we encourage our members to continue engaging with us on this important issue.
