May 14, 2025 (Edmonton, AB) - The Canadian Bar Association – Alberta Branch (CBA Alberta) is disappointed that the provincial government has passed legislation that limits the rights of injured Albertans without fully considering public opinion or expert legal input.
“This is a fundamental change to how care and compensation are delivered,” said Robert D.L. Bassett, President of CBA Alberta. “Albertans told us they value fairness, accountability and the ability to seek justice. These concerns should have been central in shaping this legislation.”
Recent polling by Nanos Research shows:
- Only 1 in 5 Albertans believe a no-fault, for-profit insurance model will lower premiums.
- 75 per cent support keeping the right to sue.
- 82 per cent believe people should be held financially responsible for the harm they cause.
This legislation sets the framework for a no-fault, for-profit insurance model – but many of the most important decisions are still to come. CBA Alberta stands ready to work cooperatively with government and insurers to ensure the new system reflects the values of Albertans, while protecting their legal rights and access to justice.
We remain committed to contributing our expertise to help ensure these changes are implemented fairly, transparently and in the public interest.
