As a Lawyer at the WCB, you will provide a full range of legal advice and services related to corporate matters, collections, third-party liability, personal injury, administrative law, and workers’ compensation law. You will represent the WCB in various legal forums, provide legal opinions to internal departments, and play a critical role in both policy and litigation matters.
Your responsibilities:
- Provide clear, well-reasoned legal opinions and advice, especially on the interpretation of the Workers’ Compensation Act and WCB policy.
- Draft and negotiate supply and service contracts, building leases, and other legal agreements.
- Represent or assist senior counsel in proceedings before the Appeals Commission, Human Rights Commission, and various levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
- Support our Human Resources team with legal guidance related to employment law matters.
- Act as plaintiff’s counsel for injured workers, handling all aspects of personal injury litigation from inception through to resolution.
- Review files to assess third-party liability and negotiate recoveries where appropriate.
- Respond to inquiries from stakeholders including workers, employers, and legal professionals.
- Assist in drafting legislation and analyzing proposed legal reforms with potential WCB impacts.
- Maintain a broad and current knowledge of relevant legal areas, with a focus on workers’ compensation law.
Your experience and skills:
- Law Degree (LLB or JD) and active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta.
- Solid knowledge of key areas of law including administrative, personal injury and workers compensation law is an asset.
- Demonstrated experience in presenting cases before the Alberta Court of King’s Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal and various administrative tribunals.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal concepts clearly and effectively.

Salary: Commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications
