Responsibilities of the Director, Legal Services

  • Provides legal services to the organization and its Board, the various Crown-trusteed pension plan boards, and the jointly-governed pension plans

  • Supervises and mentors one (1) Pensions Lawyer as well as provides guidance to the Manager of the Privacy team

  • Responsible for a portfolio of pension legal files

  • Responsible for all Corporate Secretariat functions

  • Works collaboratively with a governance professional in delivering board materials

  • Oversees privacy functions for the organization

  • Participates in research, analysis, and review of documentation, legislative matters, and plan rule issues

  • Consults with external counsel representing members

  • Consults with insurer and insurer’s legal counsel

  • Provides assistance in drafting and reviewing procurement-related documents such as requests for information and requests for proposals. Provide guidance in review of contracts and other assigned duties as required to meet business area needs

  • The position is not responsible for preparing documents for or representing the organization at any stage of civil litigation or administrative appeal processes but would provide oversight to those who provide these services.

What you bring

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from an accredited Canadian University and an active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta

  • Legal experience with a law firm or in-house counsel department

  • Knowledge of  trust and fiduciary law, employment law, freedom of information and protection of privacy legislation, family law, and family property legislation

  • An understanding of corporate and board governance and an understanding of the pension industry would be an asset.

  • Experience with the Employment Pension Plans Act and other related pension legislation along with experience with the Income Tax Act and Wills and Succession Act

  • Experience communicating complex legislation and issues to a variety of audiences.

  • Excellent analytical and research skills, along with written and oral communication skills, are critical

  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate and maintain productive working relationships with various stakeholders and foster collaboration and effective team dynamics

  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to develop practical solutions
